AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an elective program that helps students to achieve the necessary requirements and skills to be eligible for university acceptance and completion. It is not a remediation program- it’s an advancing elective to support students who may be first generational students to graduate from college. The program has two major components: tutorials and AVID curriculum.  Tutorials will occur twice a week. Tutorials are small study groups that are facilitated by upperclassmen students or college students who assist students with their areas of confusion in their academic courses.  Our goal is to build a family within the building, but also support our community. We will create plans for high schools courses that increase rigor exposure, go on college visits, participate in community service activities, improve note-taking through the Focused Note-Taking process, access tools to prepare and improve SAT/ACT scores, research and apply for scholarships and financial aid, and research colleges to gain a better perspective of potential colleges to attend.

How do you get in AVID and what’s expected of each student?

AVID has recruitment mainly in the spring of each school year. Students can apply or be recommended by a teacher. After the submission of the application, there is an interview before acceptance to the program. Each student is expected to enroll in at least one honors/AP/dual enrollment course each year. Students must focus on maintaining a 3.0 or higher. Students also have a certain number of community service hours to serve each year and they must participate in at least two extracurricular activities whether it’s sports or clubs. Students are encouraged to reach for leadership positions to develop their skills.

What are we doing?

Each Thursday staff and students are encouraged to wear college gear. This year we are taking college field trips to Mercer University, Kennesaw State, and Georgia State. We will host a college awareness week in the spring. For our community service, we support our feeder elementary schools with their back to school bashes and fall festivals. Second semester we will host our annual sock and glove drive.
