From the Principal
About Scott Hanson:
Since beginning my career in education as a history teacher at my high school alma mater, I’ve seen that great schools are a product of the staff, students, and the community working together for the success of all students. At North Springs, we’ve built a culture that encourages everyone to do that, resulting in great student outcomes.
One of the programs I’m proud to have spearheaded in 2017 is the North Springs Freshman Academy. We created strong teacher teams to help smooth the transition between middle and high school. Providing personalized attention in smaller learning communities and working as a 9th-grade team to support students and their needs results in students learning self-advocacy and gaining a growth mindset and resilience. We increased the number of students on-track for graduation after 9th grade by 50%. The Freshman Academy empowers students to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Our school’s mission and strategic plan revolve around student success and data-driven metrics. We increased the capacity of our staff via coaching and share best practices to ensure students have the best opportunities to learn. We also offer AP classes in a true open-enrollment model, which encourages students to extend themselves academically. We’ve received accolades from the state for expanding the number of students engaging in these challenging classes.
Equally importantly, we consistently nurture a community in which student success is the proverbial “North Star” and everyone is encouraged to put kids first. All North Springs stakeholders benefit from this focus. As a result, our faculty and staff create close connections and strong relationships with students, parents, and community members. Data support this success; North Springs earns 5-Star Climate ratings, and we have a superior teacher retention rate.
In recent years, I’ve worked closely with Fulton County School leaders, North Springs faculty and parent leaders, students, community members, and all NSHS stakeholders to plan for North Springs’ future. We were challenged to identify what unique programs we could offer to benefit students in our attendance zone and beyond. I’m excited that we are rolling out our STEAM Magnet, which includes our Creative Arts Conservatory, as well as the Accelerated Career Diploma, which is unique in North Fulton and prepares students for high-skill, high-demand, high-wage jobs. We’re also excited about our brand-new building that will open in 2027!
In high school, my interests were all over the place, including music, playing football and baseball, and riding bikes all over the city. It’s exciting to lead a school where students not only have opportunities to explore many interests, but they are encouraged to do so in a comprehensive high school with over 60 extracurriculars and clubs.
I invite you to learn more about all that North Springs has to offer and to FIND YOURSELF HERE.
